Panamas Tourism

Panama City in short

Panama City is the New York of Central America, with white beaches and crystal clear water as near as one hour away. Panama is as metropolitan as Central America can be. There are many golf courses and full service resorts all around the Panama City area for a quick getaway if you stay in Panama City.

What to do in Panama City

Panama City is a city still “in the making”, there is a lot of construction going on everywhere with highrises on almost every block.Panama City itself has not much more than a few café’s and restaurants to see. Most of the shopping is done in any of the nearby malls. The most central one is called Multiplaza mall, this mall is fairly big and hosts a food court and a cinema with a few high quality restaurants aswell.

Beaches

There is a few beaches which are free to visit around one hour drive by car from Panama. The closest one is called Vera Cruz and only 20 Minutes from the City. However its not recommended to swim in that water as it is very close to the canal. It is a great quick getaway though to get some sand between your toas and maybe a Balboa beer in your hand.

The Panama Canal

Panama’s crown jewel, this 77km long canal with its three locks is for sure a great site to visit.  The first lock, Miraflores lock is the closest one to Panama City, it is located nearby Albrook airport and it takes you around 20 minutes by car to get there. Miraflores has a good buffet restaurant. Make sure to book a few days in advance and get the outside balcony, it has a great view of the canal.

San Blas getaway

It takes you around 2 hours to get to san blas from Panama City.  It’s a one hour drive passing the airport on asphalt streets. After that you take off into the reservoir area and you are in Kuhna land! They charge you a fee of $10 to enter the road and the control if you have a 4x4 vehicle. If you don’t you cannot pass that checkpoint, the roads are crazy and you actually pass over a live river while going to San Blas.  While at the port, some local Kuhnas will take you by boat to any available nearby island. The quality of the accommodation is not really high class, but one or two nights its great to stay on a tiny island with 5 huts and only coconut trees. The  locals will cook you breakfast lunch and dinner for around $50 per night, a bed in a hut included.

Bocas Del toro

To get to Bocas you fly using for example airpanama from Albrook airport (smaller airport in Panama) the prices are anywhere from $50 to $150 back and forth.  Bocas is more of a laidback backpacker area but really close to the beach and some nice sites to see.

Panama overall

Panama is a great location for you to start your Central American adventure. It is the most metropolitan area and you can always get to almost anywhere from Panama. Google your way around to see what you can find nearby to suit your needs.
